Subject: salvia for oregon
From: Merrill Jensen <merrill@gamblegarden.org>
good day,
as the former collections specialist at the oregon garden in silverton, i
may be able to help with salvias for corvallis. lots of salvia will do well
in the Willamette valley, however, for long term survival, they should be
cold hardy to at least 20 degrees f. we had numerous salvia get zapped by
early fall freezes in october where temperatures would dip into the high
teens right on the heels of warm (70s) weather. my personal favorites that
did very well there are s. x clevelandii 'allen chickering' s. greggii
cultivars, s. guaranitica, s. leucantha and s. patens. i would also mulch
with oak leaves (q. garryana) before the rains come for some added
insulation in case of an unusually cold winter.
i hope this helps,
