Re: Brachychiton

I think it is about to bloom.

I've seen the blooms before.

They are bright red, a flared trumpet style.

I will post a picture as soon as I get a bloom!

My little old librarian in the back of my head just came through for me.

I thought I knew the identity but it just wouldn't come up.

But when I was writing the above message, my little aged librarian hobbled up and handed me the right name!

He smiled his withered smile and said in his old cracked voice, "I found it! It's Brachychiton bidwillii."

The minute I heard it, I knew he was right.

He's such a grand little wizened librarian.

Leaf shape of Brachychiton are not a reliable indication of species on their own. B. populneus CAN have three to seven lobed leaves - as can other Brachychiton. Leaf colour also varies from bright green to almost purple. This seems to vary with climate as well as natural variation within and between species. The size of leaves is some indication with B.acerifolius having larger leaves - up to about 25cm - and B.populneus being smaller - 15-20cm. Flower colour is a better guide for those trying to guess from a distance, although B.populaneus can have reddish pink - well lots of dusky pink shades - or cream/yellow flowers.
