I didn't realise tha the influence of the Southern Oscillation actually
extends into the northern hemisphere. I wonder which is worse, a summer
or a winter with El Nino. Perhaps we should compare notes later. Our
part of New Zealand is warned to expect a very wet cool summer and more
wind than usual (We already live in an area of quite legendary gales
anyhow), while only about 150 miles north lies an area threatened with
a savage summer drought (and they often get real shockers).
Even without the aid of the Southern Oscillation I get the impression
that the NORTHERN summer was something of a washout this year in both
Eurasia and America, while Africa just had its usual droughts.
