Little Camellias appear quite naturally in my garden from time to time,
but I have never actually tried to GROW the seed. The hard little fruits
or pods will eventually split into segments, which open widely to let
the seed out.
>From my reference books, the seed should be sown as soon as possible
after the fruit opens. Soak seed in warm water for 24 hours and then sow
on a mixture of equal parts of peat and coarse sand. The temperature
needs to be 70-75 F and germination takes 1-2 months.
Seedlings can then be grown on in ordinary potting mix and should flower
in 2-3 years. They are unlikely to be the same as the parent, but you
could get a nice new variety.
