John.
Was most interested in your reference to smoke and its effect on the
germination of some Eucalyptus species.
Only a month ago a local TV gardening programme here carried a talk by a
nurseryman on the use of smoke for stimulating germination in a number
of other Australian species. Australia is always having summer bush
fires and I had alwways imagined the stimulus was from the heat of the
fire, but he explained for some at least it was simply being smoked. As
I recall, he was demonstrationg with seed of Anigozanthus (kangaroo
Paws) and he was very cleverly using an apparatus originally intended
for smoking fish, which seemed ideal for the purpose.
