Grasshopper control

Hi everyone!  Here in Southern California, we seem to be experiencing an
onslaught of grashoppers -- big brown ones that are six or seven inches
long, small green ones that are two or three inches long (are these the
younger sibs of the brown ones?).  I've never seen so many!  How can I
deter them without spraying the little buggers with poison?  What have you
done in such a situation?
