Interestingly real coffee berries have a mucilaginous layer under the
skin, which makes them somewhat slimy too. This slimy layer is also
sweet and where I was brought up, in Kenya, children used to love to
chew into the berries for this sweetness, but they would spit out the
actual kernels all over the place. This infurtiated my father, whose
profits were being wasted on the ground, but I don't think he could do
much about it..
