Jane Calocephalus (Leucophyta) brownii is relatively easy to propagate
from cuttings and probably far less 'fiddly' than trying to isolate
the chaffy seeds from the flower heads. Select 2" long side shoots
and carefully tear them from the plant so a small 'heel' remains at
the base. Insert these in pots or trays of a very coarse, sandy
compost - ideally 60/40 sand/peat to half and inch deep, water
thoroughly and keep lightly shaded. Make sure the cuttings do not dry
out totally, but at the same time, do not keep them soaking wet. Some
folk recommend the use of a rooting hormone, but I've never found it
necessary. Cuttings taken in August and September will start to root
within a few weeks, but should be left undisturbed until the following
spring, by which time a good root system should have formed. They can
then be planted out into their final position.
