I wouldn't even use black plastic. A pad of newspaper covered with a
layer of mulch (to keep it moist and in place) will do the same job and
doesn't even have to be taken up when the clearup is finished, but just
rots away eventually into a bit more organic matter to enrich your soil
(and moreover worms just LOVE living under it and processing all your
unwanted weeds).
Dont be shy with the paper (or cardboard, if you have any) but put it on
up to half an inch thick.
This method will happily dispose of any plant which doesn't run around
underground like couch (twitch) or convolvulus.
I haven't seen Kikuyu grass for years (though I was brought up in its
home territory), but my recollection is that it has only above-ground
runners which the paper will deal with beautifully. It will also finish
off almost any common weed or grass and should make short work of the
iceplant.
