Re: Killing weeds
Hello Beverly
We too have a terrible Convolvulus minor problem. Up till now we also have
had no success, but.....
I have found some information in an old HDRA publication (UK Organic
Gardening Research Establishment) that planting Tagetes minor (which is a
weed I think in SA - someone please put me right on that ) which grows to
around 2m high and has almost insignificant flowers. the theory is that it
has root secretions which are deadly to Convolvulus and the programme is to
sow them direct or transplant seedlings to get plants that will eventually
touch each other and give ground cover, then allow them to make full size
and stand in the ground as long as possible. (cutting off flowers if you do
not want them to seed). I have seed and am going to try it this winter and
next spring. As yet I have no personal knowledge of its effectiveness, but
we are so desparate to rid ourselves of at least some of the beast that it
seems worth trying.
