I'd tend to agree....Clausen and Ekstrom rate it to z 7, but they
also say A. mollis is only hardy to z. 8 and it returns for me each
year in the cold end of z7. A. balcanicus they rate to zone 6, so
that one should work for sure as it might survive in z5 if they are a
zone too conservative consistently. That I grow also and it seems
bone hardy for me. It dies completely back in winter, whereas A.
mollis keeps trying to be evergreen and getting nipped by hard frosts
- returning during mild periods to get nipped again.
My take is try it in a sheltered spot - give it sun and very good
drainage and see what happens. Mulch in winter or leave the old
foliage on to protect the crowns.
