Re: North American Public Gardens
Janis,
I agree with everybody's recommendation to see the Dupont estate at
Longwood Gardens. During the summer they have concerts in the evening
and fireworks displays, but we didn't know that and had only planned to
spend an afternoon there. Now, I love gardens but estates also have
beautiful libraries, drawing rooms, conservatories -- rooms that I only
read about in books (and the boardgame "Clue"). So, the lady at the
ticket booth told us which places were "must see".
We headed first for the conservatory, while making "Clue" jokes
("Colonel Mustard, lead pipe, in the Conservatory"), but as we crossed
the threshold I stopped in my tracks, not because it was wonderful
(which it was) but because it suddenly felt so familiar. I was sure that
I'd been there before. That evening I called my father to tell him about
it and he said, Yes, I had been there -- only once -- at the age of
three, and I had taken a particular liking to the conservatory. Dad
could recall me in my Sunday-school dress, peering around stone
sculptures and plants that were much taller than I was.
As this was all being remembered twenty-nine years later, I'd say
that Longwood Gardens makes a big impression!
Janet
