Re: Too early to prune?


I live in zone 5 too, the Chicago area, and I started pruning my apple and
pear trees about a month ago. In my opinion most shrubs that are not spring
bloomers should be pruned about now.  I'm holding off pruning Clematis until
I see what shoots survived winter.

If the bare root roses show no growth yet I think it's safe to plant them
outside. If they have been kept inside a store and started to grow, I would
hold them in the garage, preferably near a window, for a few weeks more so
that the shoots are not damaged by frost.
