Ramps

The other morning on the NBC Today Show cooking segment, one of the ingredients used was referred to as "ramps" and was described as in the onion family. The only reference I was able to find was that ramps are wild onions grown in the woods in Virginia and the Ohio Valley. So are they a type of wild leek?
Can anyone expand on this?
