Thank you so much, Kitty... That's very helpful.

My 'Multiplex' came, I'm pretty sure, from Garden Vision (the epimedium nursery) and I've been counting petals this year and they're all in the low forties; but the clump is getting weak and needs lifting, dividing and replanting. It's interesting that the petals are noticeably shorter and more narrow than the petals on the usual wild eight-petaled plants. Also, I recently came across a scientific paper from the 1940s in which there's a report of a flower with more than sixty petals - that must have been impressive...

Thanks, again.

Graham

Graham,
Was about to say it was too late as I thought mine were already done.  But I just went out to check and there are a few flowers yet below the leaves. They look a bit whimpier than the ones that were flowering last week, but I pulled 3 to see what they had. Petal counts were 48, 49, and 53.    I got mine in 2003  from Ellen Hornig’s Seneca Hill. (I actually found my invoice)  She labeled them as Sanguinaria Canadensis ‘Multiplex’.  The patch has spread slowly, but they are just so lovely.  I look forward to them every spring.

Yes, Chris, this is a lovely plant.

Can I ask everyone a favor? If you grow this plant, or any of the named forms of bloodroot, can you please pick a flower or two from your clump, pull each flower apart and count the petals? I'm doing some research on the named varieties for the RHS and it would be really useful to have that kind of input. If you feel like measuring a petal or two as well, that would be even better.

What showstoppers have you guys had in your gardens this year?

This is my double bloodroot, Sanguinara canadensis forma multiplex,
that I planted several years ago.  It responded really well to
a an application of 10-10-10 fertilizer last spring and doubled
in size, spreading further into the path at the base of a large
rock.

The photograph just shows a portion of the patch.
