Yes, my Tennessee form has 12 petals, occasionally 11, and the "pink form" is similar. It looked to me as if the flowers on Chris's neighbor's clump had nine or ten but, as you say, it's difficult to see from the picture. But I found a couple of plants in the wild here in PA the other day with 12 petals (and others with 9, 10 and 11).

There's a long discussion on the difference between 'Muliplex' (with many petals) and 'Plena' (with just a few more than normal) in Linc Foster's book Cuttings From A Rock Garden.

This is fascinating stuff!

I just read Graham's request.  I have the 8 petaled form native to my wildflower garden on Chilhowee Mountain but now am searching for forms with more petals.  One from friend has 21 petals and slightly different mature leaf.  I guess I am looking for what is called the Tennessee form with more petals.  Chris's neighbor has lots but hard to count from picture.  But I would be willing to count if a plant came down this way.  Nancy

Yes, Chris, this is a lovely plant.

Can I ask everyone a favor? If you grow this plant, or any of the named forms of bloodroot, can you please pick a flower or two from your clump, pull each flower apart and count the petals? I'm doing some research on the named varieties for the RHS and it would be really useful to have that kind of input. If you feel like measuring a petal or two as well, that would be even better.

What showstoppers have you guys had in your gardens this year?

This is my double bloodroot, Sanguinara canadensis forma multiplex,
that I planted several years ago.  It responded really well to
a an application of 10-10-10 fertilizer last spring and doubled
in size, spreading further into the path at the base of a large
rock.

The photograph just shows a portion of the patch.
