Hi Sol,
Mr. Deno, a retired chemistry Professor, decided to try to quantify the
exact germination requirements of approx. 2500 species of plants in the
first volume, I don't have the second volume so i don't know how many
more species are covered in that book.
There is info on how the experiments were set up, how to use Gibberelic
acid-3, a powerful germination aid that seems to be required by some
species( BTW GA-3 is available in small quantities from J.L.Hudson) and
notes on collecting seed. The most valuable part of the book for me has
been the listings, species by species of the results of his trials which
enable the gardener to acheive the good results ( or sometimes, decide to
pop for a mail-order plant if the germination process is too onerous!)
Anyway, the book is short on snappy prose and graphics but long on
information.
