Oops! I don't want to get Sharon's hopes up for a shade bed
under a silver maple. The big fern and rhododendron bed we put in is
under a large old hard maple, and they have deeper roots by quite a bit
than the silver maples.
But, of course, it all depends on how you build up the raised
bed, what you plant in it, how much you are willing to water, what your
climate is like, etc.
