Re: Raised beds

And G'Evening to you, Wht Ros;
We're talking rocks, say 6-24" across or bigger. They don't have to be
cemented, but they do have to be layed in properly so they fit together well
and hold each other in place. I am going to re-build a 50 foot rock wall
tapering into rock garden this summer, if I get to it!, that Dad did 40
years ago. The soil has washed down over the years so that the top of the
most vertical portion and the lawn above it are both at a steep angle, and
cutting the lawn along the top has been a "death defying act" for some
years. Ground level at the base has risen about two feet. I am planning to
re-build it in a series of terraces, and love the idea of a work path along
the back of each terrace. Hadn't thought of that. "How To" books on rock
walls are available at the library. I think the big tricks are to slope
each section of rock back into the hill at an angle. and to put a layer of
landscape cloth and organic material behind the rock to control erosion in
the future. Anyone have a comment?, especially about erosion?

One thing I am going to change in the flatter "rock garden" portion is to
take out islands of the rock. Dad made a solid mass of it, and "rock" is
about all there is room for. I suspect I can find many other creative
places to put it (which was Dad's problem, all that rock came out of a 100'
x 100' lawn). But it was the bottom of an old mill pont, and grows
ornamentals like crazy!

Bey the bye, the "rebar" is a steel concrete reinforcing rod. Contractors
use it the strengthen concrete, and you can buy it at a lumber yard or
building supply store. You will need to cut it with a hacksaw.
