If ever there was an easier plant to divide, it's the monarda!
Unfortunately, I divided mine (some deep purple variety whose name escapes
me, a pale pink, a fushia, and a white one) and placed it around my garden.
It has spread like wildfire!
Take your shovel/spade/trowel and divide the bee balm up like you would a
pie or a grid, allowing about 2-3" of soil around the clump. Since the
roots run near the surface, you wouldn't have to dig too far down for the
roots. I have clay-based soil and I purposely did not amend the new hole
in order to keep this plant in check (it did not work too well -- read the
earlier comment). I simply dug a hole, put the monarda section in and
watered it. Now is the best time while the plants are small; however, I
did divide it once when it was about 12" tall and it didn't seem to make
much difference.
Good luck and take care about finding a good location for it. Mine seems
to thrive in sun, shade, drought, and clay. Go figure.
