Monarda

How do you divide Monarda (Bee Balm).  I was finally successful in getting
some to grow last year, and it was beautiful.  This spring, I discover a
thick carpet of monarda coming up.  I wanted to share my bounty, but it
appears to grow through runners on the surface.  What is the best way to
divide it, and does it need to be thinned out to have some decent growth?
