I would never expect dahlias to make it through the zone 5 winter here in
New York State; however, I used to take trouble to put them in sand, but
this past year I forgot about them once I took them out of the ground, so
they were in a wire basket in the dark in the cellar, and now they've all
sprouted, under lights, and look very healthy.
