Re: Wanted: really invasive perennial

Amy,

If you want a pretty little ground cover that does well in full or
partial shade, and will crowd out ANYTHING, I highly recommend Lily of
the Valley. (Convallaria majalis) It had taken over the garden when I
bought my house almost eight years ago. I dug most of it out but it
comes back every year and spreads quickly if I don't keep after it. I
gave some to my neighbor (don't ask me why...) and hers started growing
into the lawn. If your site with the ivy and weeds is self contained,
Lily of the Valley is a good choice. It looks nice all season and when
it flowers has wonderfully fragrant little flowers. In SE Wisconsin it
gets to about 6 inches, but my Steven M. Stills book, Manual of
Herbaceous Ornamenta Plants, claims it can get to 12 inches. But, be
warned, it is aggressive!
