Good idea to grow one in a container. Choose a clay container, wood or
stone, avoid anything plastic as they tend to heat up in the sun and the
roots of Clematis need to be kept cool. As to dimensions of the
container, go for one around 45cm deep by 30-40cm in diameter, make sure
there are sufficient drainage holes. Also, go for John Innes potting
compost, No.3 is fine.
Now the plant, you need to choose one that is compact and bushy in
habit. It really is up to you which one you would prefer, depending on
when you want it to bloom. Suggestions:-
April flowering
alpina "Pamela Jackson"
alpina "Ruby"
alpina "White Swan"
Early May flowering
"Elsa Spath" (deep blue)
"Miss Bateman" (white with red centre)
Early June flowering
"The President" (violet)
"Rouge Cardinal" (wine red)
"Mrs. Cholmondeley" (large blue)
July onwards
"Hagley Hybrid" (pink)
"John Huxtable" (white)
"General Sikorski" (deep blue)
July onwards (vitcellas - smaller flowers but more of them)
vitcella "Etoile Violette" (deep violet)
vitcella "Mme Julia Correvon" (deep red)
vitcella "Alba Luxurians" (white)
Your biggest problem will be choosing the plant, so many to go at:)
Good luck!
