Would just like to add to Graham's excellent advice that adequate
support, such as trellising or wire, be constructed for the clematis
to climb on. We had to add to our 6 ft. tall, 3-ft. wide wire mesh this
year to double the width for each of two Hagley Hybrid vines (4 years
old) -- a wonderful, bushy, long blooming variety in complex shades of
mauve pink. It's very hardy, blooms heavily (in part shade), and
doesn't seem to need a lot of attention. Containerized plants will need
commitment to feeding & watering more than those in the ground.
