clematis

I would like to grow a clematis against the front of my garage. However
there is no soil in this location. Is it possible to grow a clematis in
a container. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type would grow
best, how big the container should be or any other advice? thanks

Karen, I just returned from a master gardener meeting held at the garden of
one of our new master gardeners. Jill has over 80 clematis, half of which
are growing in all kinds of pots placed strategically near windows,
climbing trelliss' and arbors. The clematis is only part of the lovely
garden, roses, Birch trees, ground covers and the most magnificent bearded
iris I have ever seen. The iris are not clumped together, but placed here
and there always a delight when rounding a path. A truly gorgeous garden.
Raised beds for her berries, sitting areas for adults and one in the corner
for children. Lots of lovely shade, so welcome in our hot Sacramento valley.
So yes! you can plant clematis in containers. Just keep their feet cool.
