Thank you from Gardens North

> > 2) Had equally great success with seeds from Kristl Walek's wonderful Gardens North catalog. As far as I know, there is no website yet, but the catalog is well-worth $4.00 sent to 5984 Third Line Road North, RR#3, North Gower, Ontario KOA 2TO Canada. Kristl has posted to this list, but I haven't seen anything from her for awhile...she's no doubt way too busy this time of year.>>

wonderfully. Much better germ rate than Thompson and Morgan (sorry, but
when I spend THAT kind of money, I'd appreciate more than 1 success per
packet!).>

I am blushing...what a nice Easter weekend surprise. Thank you for your
kindness.

This is the first Easter in remembered years where snow cover remains in
most of the gardens. I am particularly grateful for the slow thaw that
we are experiencing this year. Days have been beautiful and sunny, but
cool, with nights going down to about -5C. There has been no rain. I
garden in Zone 4 USDA.

The high areas (rock gardens, sand beds, berms) and parts of the
woodland garden revealed themselves over the past 2 days. Almost
instantly the early Drabas started blooming and many of the other
alpines are beautifully mounded and poised to do something. They love
this time of year. Iris reticulata and other small bulbs are just barely
pushing their way up through the still half-frozen soil. Primula
rosettes in the woodland garden are already fine fresh masses of foliage
and the noses of many of the species Paeonia (tenuifolia, anomala, etc)
are clearly evident.

I have controlled myself with the seed sowing this year- although it
will not seem so to anyone reading this. I normally sow between
1-2,000 new species of perennials and woodies each winter. This year the
close-to-final count is 958. There are still some strays to sow. I have
concentrated on new species to fill the freshly landscaped areas (post
ice-storm); about 3 acres worth. A large new woodland garden, rock
gardens, 2 new ponds connected to our existing one with streams and
canals, a bog. And my first love, a new crevice garden (with large tufa
areas) where the choicest of the alpines will go. This will be an
exciting season for me and I can barely wait out the one more month it
will take to start the outdoor planting.

Cheers.
