It could be "oenothera". I too was given some that someone called Sundrops, and it has a flower very much like a buttercup, sort of a reddish cast to the leaves. It is invasive, doesn't spread by reseeding i don't think, just runners. But I can contain it pretty well by whacking it back in the spring. It is pretty, though.

From one small plant, I now have hundreds coming up as I did last year. It grows to about two feet and has lots of yellow flowers on it. Anyone know what it may be?
