Depends. What zone are you in? Here in zone 6a, the butterfly bushes
usually die to the ground, but this past winter was very mild and there was
little, if any, die back. I don't trim mine back until spring as a rule so
I can keep a close eye on damage and can get a good feel about the overall
shape of the bush.
I do find that if I trim, the bush ends up looking fuller and blooms
heavier since the plant blooms on new wood. An untrimmed bush will grow
taller of course, but you might end up with an "airy" look. Depends on
what you're aiming for. It can only do so much in one season here even if
it is one of the fastest growing bushes I've ever seen. I've gotten a
little quart-sized plant from Bluestone Perennials for about $4 and have it
grow to about 5' in one summer.
