RE: Phygelius (sp?)

Hi Deb,
Well, it seems possible that the warmer it is, the more shade a plant can
tolerate and still bloom well but I can't say I've ever seen any research
about this. Probably somebody - somewhere has written about it.
I have experimented with hundreds of perennials and shrubs over the last 20
years to see if they will do well in more shade than "advertised" because my
own garden has become increasingly shady as my trees and the surrounding
canopy of neighborhood trees has become taller and taller. My garden is 75%
shade now with only the southernmost strip in sun - and that is where I grow
my roses, Clematis & the nursery. I have had varying degrees of success
with growing "full sun" & "part sun" plants in part to full shade. Many,
many do very well but may not bloom as heavily or stand quite as straight.
I have killed lots of plants in this experiment too! But, far & away the
majority have done really great in my shady garden. I even have large
lavenders, Verbascums, Artemesias, daylilies & phox blooming away in dry
shade. Nothing ventured, nothing gained I suppose but the experimenting has
been a lot of fun.

Marilyn,
I am wondering if the further south you go the more shade it can tolerate?
I do have P. 'Winchester Fanfare' on the east side of my home so it
receives morning sun until about noon and then it is in open shade. It is
blooming well and full of itself. I have others in full sun also, but this
one the foliage is wonderful planted in well drained bed with minimal
watering, except of course the first year it was planted. I am in the
Pacific Northwest also so further south may be able to take a bit more
shade. What do you think?
