RE: Crocosmia

Hi Valerie, I always deadhead them thinking the energy that would go into
making seed will instead go to multiplying the bulbs. My Lucifer clumps
enlarge nicely as do several other cultivars I grow. If I had a book on
summer bulbs, I would look it up for us :). I would love to have Rob
Proctor's book on summer bulbs, but I can't remember the name of it! Right
now the summer bulb star of the garden is Acidanthera (hardy Gladiolus) but
I read the name is being changed back to Gladiolus uhhh communis(?). I
spend an awful lot of time re-writing plant stakes as the names change back
and forth!

Deadheading is recommended to promote new flower growth and so that a plant
does not waste energy on producing seed.

Would it be beneficial to remove the flower stems of Crocosmia Lucifer once
the flowers have dropped - it takes so long (for me) to spread? I normally
leave the seed heads until the plant dies down naturally. I would be
grateful to know what other Lucifer growers do?
