Valerie,

Other priorities are swimming pools, multi-car garages, parking areas,
basketball courts, swing sets, great big motor homes. I don't think the
concept is changing but I do think there is more interest in recent years.
Certainly the much expanded diversity of plants available is wonderful for
gardeners. Having a young family at home limits garden space for a few
years. When I was young, there were many immigrant families still practicing
DIY gardening. Gradually their children moved away from this "manual labor"
concept. The idea of horticulture as avocation is not typically American.

Thank you, Valerie. I knew that was wrong and I could not find the right
spelling in my tired head.

<<<< The idea of planting in
containers has exploded over here in the past few years; perhaps because of
lack of land? My deck is littered with pots (which have to be moved so
that we can sit on it) and there are containers on the drive: annuals in the
summer and evergreens in the winter.>>>>

My container collection has also become quite large. I found I could grow
plants in pots that need warmer soil sooner than it appears here. Dwarf
dahlias, cannas, other bulbs and roots from the tropics. I like oxalis
triangularis which will grow into a huge plant in a container. Also fuchsias
need transporting back and forth, there is variegated solanum and rosemary.
Quite a lot more! Take heart Valerie, I am under constant threat to remove
the containers from the back decking before someone else does it for me. I
have hardly ever seen a big clay pot that I did not like.
