Knautia macedonica is a perennial scabious which has very dark red 
flowers, perhaps a bit smaller than the largest type of perennial 
scabious flowers but quite a good size. I imagine this is not the 
plant your friend has but might be worth considering if you haven't 
got it already. It grows quite reliably from seed.
