Marillyn,
I once pruned a perfectly healthy Caryopteris back to 6" in very
early spring - following some instructions I'd read in some book or
other and killed it deadern'a doornail. I'd go with Gene and only
prune back to about 18". Actually, now that I've learned how easy
it is to kill them, I check for bud growth and prune to above some
healthy buds looking ready to break.....not always as short as 18".
