Good Morning All,
There many reasons behind how a daylily get named
some are descriptive -Sculptured Ivory, Scarlet Pansy, Autumn Prince (my latest bloomer), Sir Blackstem, (truly has black stems and is very elegant in bud)
many are named for people as tokens of affection or respect ( I may just be sitting in your garden some day)
some for their their color and color patterns - Big Bold Eyes, Brown Eyed Girl, Ebony Jewel
as expressions of faith - Angels Smile, lots of Heaven or Heavenly names
for places - Dunedin (which is among my favorite daylilies)
drinks - Double Bourbon, Scotch Sour, Zinfandel
some are odd just - Dune Needlepoint, Dust Bunny, Doorbell Ringing
some are attention getters - Pagan Ritual, Whoopree, Seductor, Seductress, Scapes from Hell, Primal Scream, Good Girls Don't
some are jokes - Lighten Up, All American Huckster
some are song lyrics, titles, etc - Michelle My Belle, Helter Skelter
and yes some are down right scatological - this is a family list and we'll leave it at that
*****
now I have a question - I have a daylily and a coral bell, both named and registered as Harmonic Convergence. Ditto a hosta and a daylily named Sir Blackstem - are some names just considered "sellers" and get used when ever possible for different species?
**********
Just one more night of sitting on the bench while Kurt does skating drills and wind sprints. This means a late start every morning for me, so I am getting very little down in the garden; still have two offspring to care for!
I am making lots of notes about the other late summer bloomers and will have my list of really good late blooming daylilies for you all early next week.
Cheryl
