I believe you did the right thing in planting the bulbs. The gladiolus will
probably flower (based upon my experience) right into frost season. They may
or maynot have time to produce another corm, but you will have had the
benefit of their flowers. The flowering of dahlias is triggered by daylength
so I would not be surprised if they flowered as well, although they may not
have enough of a growing season to create stored food reserves to survive a
winter. If you have the space, take a few cuttings of the dahlia shoots when
they are about 2-3" long, treat with rooting hormone and pot up to hold
overwinter in a bright sunny south window. Cannas are amazingly tolerant of
less than ideal conditions. As long as they can produce a rhizome, even a
small one, they should store overwinter. Winter storage conditions - I have
to admit - I have not perfected yet. I've either dried everything into
mummies or rotted them to slime.
