On the daylily list I belong to, there have been many discussions about the use of surfactants to make the soil absorb the water more readily, especially in pots and containers. I use a little (less than a 1/4 teaspoon) dish soap and 1 tablespoon of Neptune's Harvest Fish and Seaweed liquid fertilizer per watering can (1 gallon I think) - this does help and seems to keep the aphids away too.I'm not sure if it's my imagination but it never seems to me that watering really gets the ground as wet as rain. I measure an inch from the sprinkle and it doesn't really seem to wet the ground. Also, I remember reading that water doesn't really go sideways in the ground--does anyone know if that's true, or did I imagine it? Judy Warner
I often put a catch bucket under the window boxes to catch the drain through and reapply that water ( but sometimes I am just to lazy to do that). I use about half a watering can of the mix on the tomatoes and then hand water with the hose.
I have been spending a lot a time staying inside during this heat - trying to keep the little one inside and quiet. My son knows enough to drink lots of fluids and is walking everywhere instead of riding or blading. Wish me luck tomorrow - the forecast is for mid 90's again and I have to run the pack hot dog stand for Old Home Days, but I nabbed the early shift (10 AM to 12 Noon) and can get home to the AC quickly after that.
