Donna, I'm sure you'll get many suggestions, but here are a few that do well
in my shade: for low-growing plants, epimediums. There are some lovely
lavender shades, also white. Darrell Probst has the most extensive listings,
I think, and has color photographs of many in his pamphlet. Let me know if
you want the address. I understand you don't want a hosta bed, but don't
rule them out completely. Strategically located, they sure do keep things
going from beginning to end. Also, pulmonaria, hellebores, perennial lobelia
(not for deepest shade and may need staking), ferns (I especially like
maidenhair and painted fern; ostrich fern is cool-looking but has a mind of
its own), ligularia for a very bold foliage accent (you can cut off the
rather tatty flowers especially since they're the wrong color for you),
solomon's seal in various heights, and tovara 'Painter's Palette' if you
don't mind dealing with the self-seeding.
