Re: Trees changing color

What appears to be early fall color in trees is a natural response to
drought. If there is a serious lack of moisture, trees shut down chlorophyll
production early as a defense mechanism. In such cases, it isn't true fall
color. The leaves just lose their green color and turn yellow and then brown,
but not the vivid colors -- the oranges, purples, reds and bright yellows --
we see in years when there has been plenty of rain. The bad news is that you
are probably not going to have a glorious fall. The good news is the trees
are just protecting themselves and will most likely survive. --Janis
