Re: Lobelias

Hello Donna & Bill,
Couple of nice hybrids that have performed nicely for me and are
reliably perennial are Ruby Slippers and the Grape Knee-Hi that bill
mentions. Ruby Slipper is a gem... deep velvet ruby in color. Tall in half
way decent solid with some moisture. There is a cross between the L.
cardinalis and L. siphilitica called L. gerndii x Vedrariensis... looks
pretty much like the Great Blue Lobelia to me. These are in bloom here along
with the L. cardinalis and the great blue. For drop-dead color the species
L. cardinalis and Ruby Slipper can not be beat. Real show-stoppers in the
garden.
Do not mulch these babies.. they are now forming the new off-sets that
will be next years plants in the garden. Mulch will smother or cause crown
rot. Either way no new plants next season.
