Donna, may be new for you, but I've seen and loved this spider since I was a
kid. We always called it a "banana spider"--although tropical bananas and
spiders do not exist in Cincinnati. I have no idea what it's true common or
scientific name is. I spotted one in my own garden yesterday and admired
his/her handsomeness. That latticing in the center of their webs is common
too.
This is a BIG spider for this area and I wouldn't want it crawling on me. But
I surely wouldn't kill it. In fact, I go out of my way to avoid harming
spiders. Some day, if you've eradicated all the spiders, you'll discover an
alarming increase in undesirable insects.
