Hello there,
No need to be worried about this particular spider; it is the common
Garden Spider, Argiope aurantia. They are really pretty docile, we
have lots of them here on the west coast and I've never had any of them
do anything except to crawl off me when I've found one in my tomatoes
or elsewhere.
I'm not a spider afficionado by any means.... mostly they scare the hell
out of me, but I found an article on the Discover Channel website and
it was very interesting. It told which ones were more aggressive than
others and more inclined to bite. I learned to enjoy the little
jumpers and put them outside whenever I found them in the house.
Anyway, here is another picture of the Argiope aurantia.

and I'm sure there are others if you do a search on them through either
dogpile.com or google.com.
