Hi Linda,
Horticulture Magazine also recommended cutting back foliage when
dividing daylillies. Of course, this article is about seven years old
by now (in my clippings file). But, I believe they were recommmending
doing the division in late spring. My concern was if I cut back
foliage then, would I also halt flower production.
Never tried it - I just dig the daylillies, divide, and move them
elsewhere. The foliage gets a little brown if I don't water enough,
but they survive. I've also never had dieback of the foliage after
flowering. Frost usually gets it first.
