Could be your Astilbe are just not getting enough water. They *really*
want damp soil to be happy. If you have a lot of mature trees, the root
competition will be pretty stiff for water and nutrients. Astilbe will
need a lot of additional watering and lifting every couple of years so you
can amend the soil -- they are also greedy feeders.
I know that walnuts create problems for a number of plants, but I have them
popping up all over, courtesy of my squirrel population, and have not
noticed a problem with my Azaleas. In fact, I have a walnut about 4' tall
coming up through some Azaleas that I have got to go cut down for the
umpteenth time -- it is impossible to pull them out, they have a root that
must go to China.
