Emily,

Yes, Hosta prefer soil on the acid side.  Some ferns do well in alkaline
soil, but not Hosta.  And, in hot climates, Hosta want shade, at least from
hot afternoon sun.  And, most ferns want at least partial shade.  There are
exceptions to all this....but as a general rule...
