Re: Help with Lupines

I live on Prince Edward Island in Canada's east and we have lupins
coming out our ears in late June to early July. They grow in all the
ditches along the roads and some fields are covered with them. We are
mostly Zone 5 with lows of about -25C in winter with variable snow,
often deep but strong winds may blow the garden bare in places. Soil is
sandstone clay, acidic and we grow great potatoes! They seem to revert
to the common purple colour in many places. They give off a woderful
smell as you walk along the road and are very popular with bumble bees.
I pick a lot of the blossoms by stripping each stalk from the bottom up
and dry on screens to use as a base for pot pourri.
I think the seeds need a cold winter to germinate. I collect seed and
scatter in fall in new areas.
