Sounds like 'Jewelweed', also called 'Touch-me-not', (because of the seeds
ability to disperse themselves when the seed pod is touched). It can be used as
an antidote to poison ivy, either fresh on the area or brewed in boiling water
(it turns the solution orange) . I usually see it, like you, somewhere near
water. The flowers are orchid-like and very pretty and can be yellow or
orange and some have spots.
