plant identification and more;

Greetings:  Someday someone (even myself possibly) will present me with a
book identifying the plants growing wild in this area, 100 miles northwest
of NYC, mountainous, zone 5;

but until then, I would love to know the name of a juicy-stemmed plant which
grows near water, to five feet and more, with a little orange blossom, like
a purse, looking something like an orchid;

also, I grew penstemon, aruncus, perovskia from seed, and haven't yet had
them blossom; should I expect it this year?
