Re: moving dicentra

Bob,

Here in USDA 7a, my Dicentra eximia 'Snowflake' blooms for about
five-six months . Does 'Luxuriant' bloom even longer? Does it
get taller than your other D. eximia ? (And is that
the sp. or 'Snowflake' ?) I'm planning to get 'Luxuriant' or the
sp. this year. I also love D. spectabilis, as I remember my
grandmother introducing me to it when I was 11, just a couple of
months before her death.

I really didn't note my bloom time this spring (got to start using that
diary-I buy one every year and never put an entry in it), but it is one of
the earliest bloomers among the perennials, and it keeps on blooming until
cold weather kills it back to ground level. That's about the same 6 month
frame that your Snowflake does, but in your climate it might well run
longer.
Luxuriant is a dwarf cultivar as I understand it-12 inches tall on average,
and mine may not quite make that. Maybe 2 1/2 ft across after 3 years.
It's great for smaller gardens.
I had understood that Luxuriant was the first "all summer" blooming cultivar
of exima but my memory is shaky on some things. I have to start looking for
"Snowflake". Luxuriant's pink flowers are very pretty, but I'd love a white
cultivar as well.
I like Spectabilis as well-it was in my grandmother's garden when I was a
child, but was sadly missing when I visited the house last month to see my
mother who is looking after my grandfather. I will bring her down some to
plant next month, as part of a restoration project.
