Laurie -- I'd go along with Nina's suggestion to soak the pot in water with
some weak fertilizer, and then I'd keep it in the pot until you see
significant recovery before planting it out. They go through some shock in
the transplant process and I wouldn't want to do that to an already shocked
plant.
In my experience, buddleias are tough little plants. In fact, I've seen
them listed as problematic weed plants in parts of the US. I would expect
yours to come back with a bang, but it will do it when it is good and
ready.
FYI, I have a buddleia golden glow (yellow flowers) that I planted from a 1
gal in late April. It was about 12" tall. It is now about 4' X 4' and is
so large that it pulled itself part way out of the ground. I uprighted it
and reburied the exposed roots, but several branches still withered and
died. I cut off those branches a week ago and the rest of the plant is
going gangbusters! Tough tough tough plants!
